Actor Kamal Haasan has issued a heartfelt clarification to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) following their decision to ban the release of his upcoming film Thug Life in Karnataka. The controversy stems from Haasan’s recent statement at the film’s audio launch, where he remarked that "Kannada is born out of Tamil," sparking backlash across Karnataka.

In a letter addressed to the KFCC President, Haasan expressed regret that his comments had been "misunderstood," emphasizing that his words were meant to convey unity and affection, not disrespect. “It pains me that my statement—spoken out of genuine affection for the legendary Dr. Rajkumar’s family, especially Shiva Rajkumar—has been taken out of context,” Haasan wrote. “My intention was only to express that we are all from one family, not to diminish the Kannada language in any way.”

Reaffirming his admiration for all Indian languages, Haasan emphasized his deep respect for the Kannada-speaking community. “Like Tamil, Kannada has a proud literary and cultural tradition that I have long admired. I say with a clear conscience: my love for the Kannada language and people is genuine.”

Haasan reiterated his stance on linguistic equality, stating, “I have always stood for the equal dignity of all Indian languages and opposed any form of linguistic dominance. Such imbalance weakens the diverse linguistic fabric of our nation.”

Describing cinema as a unifying force, the veteran actor said, “Cinema is a universal language that speaks only of love and bonding. My intention was to reinforce that bond. I regret that Shivanna (Shiva Rajkumar) had to experience any embarrassment because of this misunderstanding. But I’m confident that our mutual respect and affection will only grow stronger.”

Concluding his letter, Haasan urged that his statement be received in the spirit it was intended and that his long-standing relationship with Karnataka and its people be seen in the right light. “I hope this temporary misunderstanding becomes an opportunity to reinforce our shared love and unity.”

Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court has begun hearing petitions challenging the KFCC's move to block the film’s release. The court has scheduled the next hearing for 2:30 PM today. Thug Life is slated for release on June 5.
